Peranakan Museum

Little background about Peranakan Museum
The museum used to be Tao Nan Building school. Over the 70 year occupation of the place, several changes were made to the building. Space was used differently and some structures were added while some others demolished. In 2005, the Asian Civilisations Museum closed to be redeveloped as a new museum to showcase Peranakan culture. Therefore leading to the birth of the Peranakan Museum.

The Peranakan Museum is very different from both the National Museum and SAM. Peranakan Museum focus solely on Peranakan culture. The museum have 9 gallery each with a different subject of the Peranakans. Gallery 1 is on Origins, gallery 2 to 5 is on Weddings, gallery 6 is on Language and Fashion, gallery 7 is on Religion, gallery 8 is on Public Life and lastly gallery 9 which is on Food and Feasting. Each gallery provide detailed informations about each subject and it is best to follow according to the gallery number to have a clearer view. At the information counter, there is a brochure about the museum and also an activity worksheet. This activity worksheet requires you to go to all the gallery and stamp it with the stamp machine. A mark will appear on the paper after you stamp which I think is very cool!

The stamp machine look like this:

Below are some of the photos I took at different galleries.

Upon all the Museum, I find this museum unique as they have shelves at some corner for each galleries that contains the artefacts of some of the Peranakan items and allow visitors to touch and feel them. Which is something that you do not see in most museums. Therefore I highly recommend that people come and visit the Peranakan Museum to seek a more unique experience.

This museum also have special facilities to cater to special needs such as baby care facilities. If you are hungry when visiting, do not worry as there are restaurants along the streets heading towards the Museum which are just a few walks away.

I have come to the end of my field trip to Bras Basah.Bugis district and I got to say that this trip had enlightened me as to why people called BBB as an arts and culture precinct. It is indeed a district filled with different culture and heritage of different countries. Thanks for "travelling" with me during the last few posts. It has been enjoyable sharing my experience. Till next time, bye!
