Before doing so, I researched about BBB district history in order to develop a deeper understanding about the district. From what I read, I found out some interesting facts about BBB. Bras Basah is one of Singapore’s oldest district and the name “Bras Basah” is actually a transliteration of the Malay words “beras basah” which mean “wet rice”. That name was actually quite hilarious to me. Who would have thought that it was name after "wet rice" over all sorts of name available!
After reading further on, I found that BBB was given the name because of the “decayed rice” from sailing vessels which had to be transported from ships to a site out of the city centre because of the abominable smell of saturated and rotten rice. Bras Basah was also once marked out by Sir Stamford Raffles as the European part of Singapore Town and had served as the suburb to the busy city centre which wrapped itself around Commercial Square which is known as Raffles Place now. Due to its Central Location, the Bras Basah area was considered an ideal location for the establishment of schools and places of worship to the ever-growing multicultural communities. All of these history can be found from the official website of BBB as it is exactly where I found them.
